Types of items used for storage include containers, cabinets, barrels, large pots, and bins. They can be used to to hold items, from personal possessions to gems, alcohol, quarry bush leaves, and even living creatures. Each item type can store certain types of objects, see table below.
Chests, coffers, boxes and bags are collectively referred to as boxes and bags, and all these can be built as "containers" from the building menu to satisfy the "Needs: X Chests" requirement for nobles. Each other storage object type has its own entry.
To enable bins and barrels to be used to hold stuff in a stockpile, you need to increase maximum allowed number of corresponding containers for that stockpile, which all initially set to zero. This is an important step as otherwise you'll need much more area for your stockpiles to hold all the items.
